This program serves to honor the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Resolution 1325, which was the first resolution ever passed by the Security Council that specifically addresses the impact of war on women and women's contributions to conflict resolution and sustainable peace. Highlights of the panel include:
Dr. Karumbu Ringera, founder and executive director of International Peace Initiatives. A native of Kenya, she holds a Ph.D. from the University of Denver, Colorado. Dr. Ringera vied for the North Imenti parliamentary seat during the 2007 general elections, a constituency that had not had a woman candidate run for office since independence. She conducted peace dialogs in the IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps which inspired many displaced women to start peace-building initiatives. Former Colonel Ann Wright, retired United States Army and retired official of the U.S. State Department. After receiving a master's in national security affairs from the U.S. Naval War College, she participated in reconstruction efforts after U.S. military actions in Grenada and Somalia. Wright resigned from the State Department on March 19, 2003, the day before the onset of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Since then, she has been awarded the Truthout Freedom and Democracy Award and wrote Dissent, Voices of Conscience. Moderator: Local Michele Hovey has over thirty years experience as a community activist. An experienced convenor, she facilitated an International Women’s Conference in Nairobi, Kenya in 2005 and the 2009 Women's International Grassroots Peace Congress in Meru, Kenya.
